Sierra Leone, like most of Africa, is ‘obsessed’ with football. Everywhere you look you see boys (and young men) wearing their fake premiership shirts!
Football is a healthy distraction from a lot of the hardships that young people face. Football also brings communities and individuals together – which is important in a nation that is sometimes divided by tribal and political differences.
Rohit realised how important football was in the lives of young people on his first trip when he took out a complete football strip donated by Cheltenham Town FC. With this a new youth football team was formed, and they are now playing in a small local league.
On the 2010 trip to Madina, a kit donated by Swindon Town FC was given to a small village called Malakia, where one of the mobile clinics is held. The village now has its own team called FC Swindon Malakia!
Football kits have also been donated by Forest Green Rovers, Leckhampton Town, AC Olympia, Real Fairford, and EVERTON FC.
Rohit is always on the look out for complete football kits – so if any Premiership or team footballers are reading this and want to help, get in touch. It could be the way to finding the next Didier Drogba!!!
